Es wird vom Lion Air Flug am Tag zuvor (28. Oktober 2018) berichtet, dass die Piloten mit demselben Problem zu kämpfen hatten, zufällig aber ein nicht-diensthabender erfahrener Pilot mit im Cockpit war und sagen konnte „Ich kenne das Problem, Ihr müsst den Hebel X drücken.“

Die Untersuchungen in Seattle haben inzwischen etwas weit Ärgeres herausgebracht: Für die gesamte 737-Serie wurde das Duplizitätsprinzip für die Computersteuerung an Bord zwar hardwareseite eingebaut – dann aber wurden die faktisch nicht sinngemäß laufen gelassen, also einer aktiv, éiner im Stand-by, um im Fall des Ausfalls übernehmen zu können. Die beiden Bordcomputer waren vielmehr so eingestellt, dass die pro Flug abwechselnd nur einzeln eingeschaltet wurden.
